A Cautionary Tale of Impulsivity: Why Trusting Professionals Matters

There’s something exciting about deciding you want a piercing.

Sometimes it’s planned for months.

Sometimes it’s a sudden spark of, “I’ve always wanted that.”

We live for that energy 🙌

We love piercings…how something small can shift your confidence, mark a moment, or just make you feel like you.

They’re art.

They’re personal.

They’re powerful.

And because we love them, we approach them with care.

At Inked Lotus, Rah handles all professional piercings.

As a studio, we prioritize proper anatomy placement, sterile practices and safe healing; because once you understand what’s happening beneath the surface, you realize how much those details matter.

The Anatomy You Don’t See

Did you know the tongue is one of the most vascular parts of the body?

It’s packed with blood flow and nerve endings. That’s part of why it can heal quickly under the right conditions, but it’s also why placement matters.

If a needle hits the wrong spot, bleeding can be heavier than you expect and harder to control.

Numbness or irritation can linger longer than you think.

I actually saw this happen when I was 18.

Someone I know had a tongue piercing go sideways…queue lots of bleeding and lots of panic.

Watching it unfold made me realize anatomy isn’t just a technical detail.

It’s everything.

What Professional Training Really Means

Professional piercers are trained to:

Know where blood vessels and nerves are and where they aren’t

Work with muscle structure in tricky areas

Use sterile, single use needles and autoclaved tools

Pick implant-grade jewelry that supports healing

Measure placement based on anatomy, not guesswork

Give aftercare advice that actually fits the person

At Inked Lotus, those standards aren’t optional.

They’re how we make sure every experience is as smooth as it can be.

When Shortcuts Are Taken

When piercings are done without proper training or sterile tools, risks go up.

That can include:

• Excessive bleeding

• Nerve damage causing numbness

• Jewelry embedding because it’s the wrong size

• Infection or deeper tissue issues

• Migration, rejection, or visible scarring

• Chipped teeth with certain oral piercings

Even the tools matter.

Devices that use blunt force instead of a hollow needle can tear tissue instead of cutting a clean channel. That affects comfort, placement, and healing.

I’ve seen this firsthand. That’s why professional training and careful technique make such a difference. When you respect how the body works and use proper tools, a piercing can heal beautifully.

Done correctly, piercings can heal safely and look amazing.

Why We Care

We’ve seen swelling that shouldn’t have happened.

We’ve seen jewelry embed because it was too short.

We’ve seen chipped teeth, scar tissue, and piercings that had to be removed.

Some of that we’ve witnessed.

Some of it we’ve experienced ourselves. 😅

Life teaches you things.

And when you realize how much of that can be avoided with the right knowledge and tools, it changes how you approach this work.

That’s why we’re intentional.

It’s not because we’re trying to overcomplicate things, it’s because we’ve seen how meaningful and positive the experience can be when it’s done well.

Piercings should feel empowering, heal well & last. When they’re done with care, knowledge, and a respect for anatomy they absolutely can.
